GAI Medicinal Plants and Cultures of the Amazon

Each summer students from colleges of Pharmacy around the U.S. travel to GAI’s 92-acre reserve and research center near Iquitos, Peru to participate in this unique workshop on medicinal plants and natural medicine.

The course combines on-campus study with a two-week field program in the Amazon rainforest. While in the Amazon, students attend classes in ethnobotany, pharmacology, pharmacognosy, and toxicology at the National Institute for Traditional Medicine (IMET) and workshops on medicinal plants and agronomy at the National University of the Peruvian Amazon’s Institute of Research (UNAP/IIAP). In addition, they attend sessions with local pharmacists and herbalists; engage in numerous jungle tours; and spend a night camping on the Amazon River and two days at the exclusive Heliconia Jungle Lodge. A highlight of the program for students is rowing some 100 miles on the Amazon River in dugout canoes to classes and on excursions.

The program is hosted by the Global Awareness Institute (GAI), a Florida-based non-profit organization dedicated to developing medicinal plants of the Amazon as a sustainable industry. Professor/Escort Dr. Ruth Nemire emphasizes that “students who participate in this course begin to learn and understand medicine from its roots. The public is hungry for “natural medicine” information. Completing a course like this helps…to feed that need with accurate and insightful information.”

After the rotation, an optional 1-week tour of Cuzco and Machu Picchu is available.

The dates of each year’s program are posted on the Study Abroad Programs Menu on

The cost of the program from Lima, Peru is $3,150.  Included are round trip airfare Lima-Iquitos, lodging and meals at GAI’s jungle lodge near Iquitos, tuition for classes in Peru, and all scheduled field trips.   Not included are personal items and some meals while away from the reserve.
